Description
This is a build from 2020 I'm storing on the site for my own reference. That was the worst time to find parts (I had trouble even getting a PSU!), but I didn't want to wait any longer.
No RGB or other gamer bro stuff. All I care about is minimizing noise and having a slick cable management experience, so I'm unsurprisingly a big fan of Noctua and Fractal Design.
The components fit well except that the case barely closed with the NH-U14S putting a bit of pressure on the RAM module closest to the CPU. I ended up switching to 2 sticks from 4 (which is better on newer mobos anyway). If possible, I'd recommend getting a module with a shorter heat spreader. The 3080 fit with no problems, though I did use a GPU brace to help hold up that monstrosity against gravity. Probably overkill.
I had a NVMe in there for fast photo/video processing, while the SSD was primarily the game library. It also received some hand-me-down bulk drives from the old rig.
Props to Asus for providing excellent default optimized settings for overclocking. I've never been much for tweaking so that bang-for-the-buck was a big win.
Part Reviews
CPU
This is basically an i9-10900K that someone coughed on for $150 less.
CPU Cooler
Prepare your parts hole, because this is a big boy. Will it fit? Guess you'll have to try to find out.
Motherboard
Good mobo with lots of features and decent AI overclocking, though it compromises on drive options. Note that if you want to use an NVMe in the M2_1 slot, you should do this before you put on any tower CPU cooler (or at least remove the screw that it will cover). Also make sure you set your NVMe to PCI x4 mode in Advanced Options (if applicable), because x2 is the default. Some folks reported being unable to get x4 in the M2_1 slot, but that wasn't a problem for me because I didn't think ahead, so I had to use the M2_2 slot. But note that using the M2_2 slot makes SATA 5 and 6 unusable.
Memory
Worked well until it died on me after 4 years.
Storage
One of the best 2TB SSD options at build time (2020). It's been outclassed somewhat by M.2 NVMes, though.
Storage
It was a beast back in 2020 and it's still a beast now.
Storage
Works decently, but it's shingled at 6TB, which is somewhat sad these days.
Storage
5 stars for being the spiritual successor to the WD Raptor. These days, I'd say you're better off with a SSD.
Video Card
Still a great card after 4 years. It was practically impossible to get one in 2020.
Case
Great case. Fractal Design paid attention to every little detail and it shows. Fits a Noctua NH-U14S and a 3080. Comparing this to a Fractal Design Refine series, the Meshify is quieter at high load when the fans are going crazy (due to the improved airflow) but the Refine is quieter at idle and blocks random noises better.
Power Supply
Still going strong, and SeaSonic is usually a reliable choice. The modular cables that came with this one are flat, though. I prefer the ones that are wrapped up in a mesh casing.
Case Fan
It's good, but get 140mm if your case can support it. PWM is totally worth any premium.
Monitor
Excellent productivity and creativity monitor. Everything is crisp, color is perfect, and it's very pleasing to stare at for hours.
Monitor
Gorgeous monitor that's held up great since 2020. Note that there are several very similar variants of this monitor with wildly differing prices, and the only difference appears to be which seller has them. For instance, this one is Amazon's. The PC Part Picker listings for some of them note different curvatures, but I'm pretty sure that's not true. Compare the dimensions. If they're identical, then the curvature should be as well.
Mouse
Great mouse. Got this after my MX518 stopped working and haven't looked back since.
Headphones
The band snapped on me but I still bought a new one. 🤷♂️
