Description
This is a Linux desktop build for gaming and software development. I built it to replace my aging AMD FX machine and it has been a nice upgrade. The one problem I'm having is crashes with H.264 hardware encoding on Mesa, but it still beats the horrible Nvidia experience on Linux.
By the way, I like to name my Linux machines after Star Wars characters 😛
Part Reviews
CPU
I don't know how else to review other than it's fast and it suits my needs. AM5 looked too unstable and expensive at my time of purchase.
CPU Cooler
Runs quiet, easy to install, and looks good. A bit under-spec for the 5800X but still getting decent temps.
Motherboard
This board is working well for me. I had no problems enabling XMP and updating the BIOS.
Memory
I've always loved how this kit looks and for 90 bucks I couldn't resist. 32 GB should be plenty for years to come, unless Windows figures out how to waste even more memory.
Storage
Very fast. It's amazing how affordable 1 TB of solid state storage is today.
Video Card
I figured since the 6000 series was over 2 years old that I might as well pick this over the 6700 XT. The card has nice aesthetics but is absolutely massive so I'm glad it fit in my case.
I took off a star for some coil whine that happens under load. It sounds like if you were to stick a piece of paper in the fan blades and it gets louder the higher you set the frame rate. If you're wearing headphones, you won't notice it however.
Case
Very nice case, it was easy to build in and it looks great! Features like captive thumb screws, velcro straps, and removable dust filters are things that my old case didn't have.
The tinted glass side panel is a bit dark so I might add some lighting in the future. Also the included 120mm fans have a very slight rumble and they aren't as quiet as the "be quiet!" fan I have. I'll need to get some more fans to take advantage of the airflow design.
Power Supply
From other reviews on the Internet, it seems like a solid unit. My only complaint is that the cables, specifically the daisy-chained PCIe cables, are kind of ugly.
